Samsung tries again, unveils the Galaxy Note 8

Samsung isn’t giving up after last year’s fiasco with the Galaxy Note 7.

The South Korea-based company unveiled the Galaxy Note 8 at an event in New York today. Highlight changes include the Infinity Display that Samsung debuted with the Galaxy S8 earlier this year, dual rear cameras, and a smarter S-Pen.

Following the theme of 2017 smartphones, the Note 8 has ditched its bezels, allowing for a bigger display without having to create a bigger body. The Note 8 has a 6.3 inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity Display, compared to the 5.7 inch screen of the Note 7, and is roughly the same size as its predecessor.

As for its processor, the Note 8 uses the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 that the Galaxy S8 uses, but has two more gigs of RAM at 6GB. It’s base storage option is 64GB, but can be expanded up to 256GB. You can view the full tech specs below.

In order to prevent any explosive issues from popping up this year, Samsung has doubled-down on its battery safety protocols. Appropriately enough, the Galaxy Note 8 has gone through the company’s 8-point battery check.

The biggest addition to the Note 8 is a second 12 megapixel rear camera, making this the first smartphone to have dual rear cameras. Samsung says this means that you’ll have higher variety of shots with the two cameras working together. For example, one could take a close-up shot from the telephoto lens, and the other could take a wide-angle shot that shows the entire background.

On the front of the device, there is an 8MP front-facing camera.

The Note 8 features some new features for the S-Pen. While the stylus itself has been upgraded with a finer tip and increased pressure sensitivity, new features include ‘Live Message’ that allows you to scribble texts or drawings across apps that support GIFs. Users can also write notes on the always-on display.

Additional features include IP68 water and dust resistance and wireless charging. It is also compatible with the Samsung DeX.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will be available at all major retailers in Canada in stores or online on September 15. Pre-orders begin today, August 23.
