hEr VOLUTION announces STEMing UP student, Sanaa Syed, success

TORONTO, ON Canada – June 17, 2019 – hEr VOLUTION, an award-winning, non-profit organization that inspires young women to embrace STEM-based careers, is proud to announce success in their STEMing UP Program.

Sanaa Syed, STEMing UP student

STEMing UP was designed to introduce young women – who are facing multiple barriers – to the fundamentals of computer science.

“Our goal is to  break down barriers for young women interested in STEM education.  It is with such delight that our efforts are now being seen

After only one year in STEMing Up, Sanaa was accepted into partner company Shopify’s Dev Degree Program, which fastracks the education and job possibilities for young developers.

Sanaa has always been an excellent student, always wanting to learn as much information as possible and showing persistence and team teamwork. She always took her future career seriously by committing to doing the necessary work in the program.”  says Doina Oncel, Founder and CEO at hEr VOLUTION.

Built on the success of the past programming, STEMing UP aims to equip young women with the confidence, skills, professional portfolios and networks to pursue fulfilling careers in the STEM industries with a focus on computer science. The initiative began in 2018 and this year it will focus on running two cohorts simultaneously.

“My time at STEMing UP was phenomenal as I was able to combine my passion for computer science as well as my hope to make the world a better place. From this program, I was introduced to Dev Degree which I will be joining in Fall of 2019. I am passionate about leading other minority girls into the world of STEM just as I was and hope to encourage young girls to go into tech fields.” says Sanaa Syed STEMing UP student 2018-19 cohort

The students are exposed to python, javascript, HTML and CSS coding skills, design thinking, UX Design, marketing and business development while delivering a real solution to a small business. Demos of their projects will take place on August 23, 2019 to a mixed audience, students, parents and industry professionals. The selected participants will deliver their best problem-solving idea for this year’s business challenge partner.

“Sanaa’s experience in the STEMing UP program has kickstarted her journey in tech — one she will continue to explore at Shopify over the next 4 years! I’m thrilled to see Sanaa join the Dev Degree 2019 cohort.” – Brittney Oberfeld, Senior Outreach Producer at Shopify

The Dev Degree program provides students with a true work-integrated learning experience, dissolving the gap between classroom studies and on-the-job knowledge. With Dev Degree, students work on development teams at Shopify in parallel with their university studies, instead of alternating terms in the classroom and the workplace. They are granted academic credits for their work at Shopify, so they complete their honours degree in computer science in four years with 4500+ hours of work experience. Shopify pays students’ tuition, a competitive salary, and vacation, for a total financial support of more than $160,000.

hEr VOLUTION is looking forward to making further impact in the tech sector, particularly to promote STEM-related activities and career options for young women and girls from underserved communities from Ontario.
