Canadians nab 33 Webby nominations

It’s that time of year when the so-called “Oscars of the Internet” gears up for another awards show, 2014 marking the 18th annual Webby Awards.

There’s a record number of nominees from outside of the U.S. this year and Canada has a healthy contingent with 109 honorees and 33 nominees. Officially known as the Interactive Advertising & Media Awards, a panel of judges from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences will select winners to be presented at a May 19 awards show in New York.

The National Film Board of Canada received the most nominations with three total. Two were for Highrise, its interactive documentary about the history of urban living in high rise apartment towers. It’s interactive Insomnia and The Last Hunt projects also received nominations.

Also included in the nominees is Milk Carton 2.0, a social media project that asked people to opt-in to distribute missing children alerts as soon as they were issued by authorities. The concept was to replace the missing child photos that used to appear on milk cartons in a modern context. The project has been credited with several rescues already made this year:
