Rogers Communications Inc. announced it will be the first Canadian carrier to launch a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in 2011 yesterday, delivering the 4G wireless service to Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa before year’s end. The incumbent carrier is advertising the new network as providing data speeds of up to three or four times that of current 3G networks, but is that really true?

Ericsson Canada opened its Ottawa-based wireless research labs, after acquiring it from Nortel Networks last year. It described as a flexible 4G technology that can deliver peak data rates of 150 Mbps, but expect to see in-field rates of around 30 to 50 Mbps. It’s a technology that’s expected to grow across North America and elsewhere.
