Hurricane Sandy is raining on Apple Inc.’s parade when it comes for a big launch day for its new iPad mini tablet, with shipping delays to regions hit by the storm.
Apple is fond of generating long lineups outside its own retail stores and other retailers that sell their hardware on opening day. The iPad mini, a new form factor that has receive much hype before its launch and already sold out of online pre-orders, was due to be released today in stores. But stormy weather has postponed that launch at least along the eastern seaboard.
A Toronto-area Best Buy had not received shipments of the iPad mini on the morning of Nov. 2. Best Buy stores opened two hours early to welcome eager Apple buyers, but some only had the iPad fourth generation to show them. Staff cited shipment delays due to the hurricane as the problem, and said shipments for the device could start being received at any time.
Shipping companies are reporting delays and disruptions in areas impacted by Sandy. FedEx Canada’s site is referring customers to a notice from its U.S. division. Although it only lists States where delays will be experienced, it seems Canada is affected too.
The iPad mini was slated to be sold in retail stores Nov. 2.
“The severe weather system that brought hazardous conditions across the northeast is still leaving difficult conditions and continues to affect FedEx operations,” the notice states. “FedEx is committed to providing service to the best of our ability in areas that can be safely accessed and where conditions have improved.”
The Best Buy Canada Web site has a section for the iPad mini, with an image stating the Wi-Fi models are now available. But other information areas on the page are left blank and there seems to be no way to purchase it this morning. The Future Shop site is down for a scheduled upgrade, according to a notice online.
The Apple Canada store is selling the iPad minis online, but says they will be available in two weeks.
