Bell gears up for first Olympics content push of the iPad era

Bell Canada is poised in the starting blocks to push an unprecedented amount of mobile content out to a Canadian audience hungry for Olympics coverage.

At the last Olympics – the 2010 winter games in Vancouver – Bell hadnine content channels overall providing live coverage of those games. In lessthan two weeks, it will be amping up that content coverage forthe London 2012Summer Olympics substantially.

“(Now) we have 15 channels and seven of those channels will be HD. Andwe have lots of video on demand content. I don’t have the exact (numberof mobile Olympics content) hours top-of-mind for you. But it’s goingto be growing as we go through,” said Nauby Jacob, vice-president ofproducts, services and content at Bell Mobility in Toronto.

“We’re the only ones (in Canada) offering HD and LTE (coverage) of theOlympic content,” Jacob added.

Although Bell, an official Canadian sponsor of the London games, alsooffered video on demand and live coverage of the Vancouver events backin 2010, “the (mobile) product is now able to take advantage of theOlympics on a larger scale,” Jacob said.

That’s largely because there are way more mobile devices today thatOlympics fans can use to access content. It’s hard to believe thattablet computers didn’t even existduring the Vancouver Olympics, butnow they’ll likely be one of the most popular devices used to watchLondon games starting next week.
