WordPerfect Office 13

The $379.99 Standard Edition contains the WordPerfect word processor, Quattro Pro spreadsheet, WordPerfect Presentations, and a new addition, WordPerfect Mail. You also get the Pocket Oxford dictionary, Presentation Graphics X3 for creating and editing graphics, and utilities like the Pleading Expert (WordPerfect is a strong player in the legal segment).

Notable enhancements to the word processor include the ability to open PDF files, edit and save them (previous versions could only publish to PDF).

It doesn’t work perfectly on all files, sometimes getting formatting wrong or mangling tables when importing documents, but it did a quite acceptable job on most.

For those concerned with word counts, Corel has added a clickable spot in the status bar that displays the current number of words in the document.

If you’re copying text from a Web page, you can easily leave the Web formatting behind. WordPerfect is still the all-time champ at opening virtually anyword processing file format you throw at it.

Quattro Pro’s major enhancements include Publish to PDF and improved crosstab reports that retain their connections to ODBC databases.

WordPerfect Office X3 is a solid contender, and at a cost of $100 less than its Microsoft equivalent, for the cost-conscious, it’s well worth a look in the office environment.
