‘Ultimate Dinosaurs’ exhibit showcases latex printing

Tablets that add an augmented reality layer to the Royal Ontario Museum’s new dinosaurs exhibit isn’t the only technology contributing to the experience.

HP Canada is behind the large, floor-to-ceiling graphics that provide the background to the enormous fossil casts on display at Ultimate Dinosaurs: Giants from Gondwana. There are more than 100 of the print panels that cover about 10,000 square feet in total. HP’s latex printing technology was used to create the colour banners.

Markham, Ont.-based Beyond Digital Imaging is the print service provider that did the work. They used the latex printing tech to provide the museum with banners that could easily be removed from the walls after the exhibit concludes.

The images are printed at a high-definition 1,200 dots-per-inch. Beyond Digital Imaging says that each file size for the images were up to 10 GB. The latex inks are water-based and designed by HP as a sustainable printing product.

Ultimate Dinosaurs also features installed iPads, loaded with an app designed by Toronto-based firm Meld Media (watch the video here). It adds flesh and skin to the bones of the skeletons as visitors scan the tablet’s camera across the casting.

The museum says they are pleased with the results and will consider latex printing in future exhibits.
