Twitter opening Moments service to more creators – including businesses

Twitter Inc.’s Moments service, the trending-topics news feed the company brought to Canada in April, hasn’t exactly been the game-changer CEO and cofounder Jack Dorsey hoped for – but perhaps adding some new voices to the mix could help turn that perception around.

That appears to be the thinking behind the social media icon’s announcement today that more creators will soon be invited to contribute their own content to Moments, which until now had been curated by Twitter staff and an exclusive team of publishing partners.

“It’s always been our goal to open up this creative canvas to more people,” senior product manager Gaby Peña wrote in an Aug. 9 blog post, noting that while the new contributors will include influencers, existing partners, and well-known brands, “in the coming months” it will eventually encompass “everyone.”

“When things happen in the world, people come to Twitter to see, experience and comment about what’s happening as it unfolds,” Peña wrote. “The stories and voices aren’t always expressed through a single tweet – they unfold across multiple tweets and involve various points of view.”

Thus far, Twitter hasn’t revealed any new media partners for Moments’ Canadian account, @CanadaMoments, though three were given access to the service when it launched in April: the Canadian Olympic Committee, ET Canada, and the Weather Network.

Cam Gordon, Twitter Canada’s head of communications, told ITBusiness.ca that for now, other Moments contributors will be added in the “coming weeks and months.”

Meanwhile, the American Moments feed has several outside contributors as well. The lone non-business voice so far appears to be African-American activist Deray McKesson:

The others, unsurprisingly, have been businesses and new publishing partners, including Budweiser beer and fashion magazine/website Allure:

And so at press time, Twitter’s in-house Moments team was winning the contest for who could add the most adorable content.
