Playing cam-and-mouse with new Genius peripheral

Need a mouse that turns into a camera?

Well, we don’t either, but we thought this little gadget was at least a nifty idea. The Cam Mouse, from Taiwanese company Genius of KYE Systems Corp., is a mouse that switches back and forth between being a mouse and being a camera. Or is it a camera that switches between being a camera and being a mouse?

In any case, the mouse-camera hybrid is slated to be something students can use to share notes, or for business professionals who want to scan and transmit documents, just by sliding the cover back on the device’s camera lens. What they would do is take pictures of handwritten notes with the camera part of the device, and then switch back to the mouse and upload it to their computer using its USB port.

The device comes with a sensor that has a print resolution of 1200 dpi, and its software allows users to directly upload pictures to Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, and YouTube.

And that’s not all – the Cam Mouse is also a webcam for Skype Inc. and Google Hangouts, though you can imagine the awkward, up-the-nose camera angles for the friend you’re Skyping as they gaze up at you from a desk.

The device sells for about $35. For more details on product information, you can check out Genius’ page here.
