Fawn Annan, Host CMO Talks Podcast

In Amanda Palmer’s book, The Art of Asking; or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Let People Help, she talks about why people don’t like asking for help. Amanda references Brené Brown’s research on shame to suggest that women tend to equate asking for help with not being enough and men tend to believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness.

I think we all need to get over it. Asking for help is an essential part of business operations. For example, how would I bring you monthly MarTech insights if I weren’t willing to ask for help from our wonderful podcast guests? 

I’m thinking about this topic because recently two of my podcast guests asked for help. They weren’t shy about it, nor did they give me a hard sell. Instead, they stated what they’re looking for and continued with the conversation.

In my years of business experience, I’ve learned that if you don’t ask, you don’t get. And if you do ask, generally the worst that can happen is you put your cards on the table and the answer is no. The downside is limited while the upside is limitless.
