All Hands on Tech: Ubi voice-activated smart home command centre

Hi there, I’m Candice So and thanks for watching All Hands on Tech.

In September 2012, the Ubi – or ubiquitous computer – received more than $229,000 in funding for its Kickstarter campaign, smashing its original goal of $36,000. Its creators started sending a beta version of the Ubi to their backers in November 2013.

Luckily for us, we’ve got a review unit handy right here. We’ll be looking at what the Ubi can do during the next month. In the meantime, here’s a quick demo.

The Ubi computer is connected to Wi-Fi and is designed to respond to voice commands. Right now it’s still in beta mode, but eventually it should be able to work with home automation.

You can ask the Ubi lots of things by starting with the words, “OK Ubi! What time is it?” Or, “OK Ubi! What is the weather in Toronto?”

So these are some basic things. But you can also ask it to do simple tasks like set a calendar reminder, or to send texts and emails.

You can also ask it to play music, and its sensors are constantly keeping track of the temperature, light levels, humidity, and air pressure in the environment around you.

It can give you some interesting facts and opinions, like this one. “OK Ubi! What is the best beer?”

There you have it. Keep an eye out on IT Business.ca for our full review later this month.
