IT World Canada’s Tech-O-Lanterns

Every Halloween, we grab the best knife in the house and happily plunge it into a large pumpkin in a bizarre act of ritual vegetable carving. It’s an occassion that only comes around once a year for Halloween, so the staff at IT World Canada decided to seize the day and pay homage to the technology people, companies, and themes that shape our daily news coverage.

From a Steve Jobs tribute to a mean-looking Angry Birds face, we hope you enjoy these “Tech-O-Lanterns.”

  • Steve Jobs tribute

Graphic designer Jonathan Mak Long first created a modified Apple logo tribute to Steve Jobs when the celebrated CEO stepped down from his role in August. But it was only after Jobs’ death that Mak saw his design go viral and he received several job offers.

Brian Jackson, Associate Editor at ITBusiness.ca adapted the logo into pumpkin form and is still waiting for the professional pumpkin design studios to start calling him.

  • Pac Man

Sales and marketing manager James King went old school with his Pac Man pumpkin design. We can tell he’s good at the classic arcade game because Pac Man is doing the chasing in this carving, rather than being chased. Get to those corners!

Video coordinator Tyson Dover showed us his social nature with this carving depicting the logos of Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

  • Like this pumpkin

Brian Jackson stole the discarded “f” from Tyson Dover’s pumpkin to create the negative version of his carving. This design is more akin to the mobile logo for Facebook’s applications.

  • This isn’t the droid you were looking for

Brian Jackson attempted carving Google’s Android logo into his second pumpkin after attending the AndroidTO conference. Unfortunately some of the smaller details led to disaster and the open source nature of this pumpkin’s platform resulted in some malfunctions. But repairs were made with paperclips and toothpicks.

  • Fail Whale

IT World Canada staff writers James Speedy and Harmeet Singh didn’t fail at all in carving Twitter’s fail whale. But where are the birds carrying this whale away?

  • Wink pumpkin

James King contributed this familiar winking smiley face in his second Tech-O-Lantern.

  • Angry Pumpkin?

Contributor Brent Jackson went for an ambitious Angry Birds-insired design. This looks like the red bird, so there’s no threat of it blowing up spontaneously or splitting up into several smaller pumpkins.
