There’s no such thing as a fairway too far

Golf odyssey takes Canadian pair to unique North American courses

Haliburton, Ontario (special interest sports, entertainment) – A new golf show premiering March 30th on TSN is taking the tradition of “going golfing with a buddy” to a whole new fairway. Highways to Fairways follows the adventures of two real-life best friends as they travel everywhere from Texas to Tignish, PEI, looking for unique golf adventures.

“We take the road less travelled,” says Charlie Teljeur, one of the show’s hosts.” You won’t see Pebble Beach or Augusta on Highways to Fairways. We’re not after the elite. We’re after the unique. It’s all about the courses everyone can play.”

In the first episode, for example, the friends from Northern Ontario travel to Indianapolis, Indiana, to play a golf course located inside the world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway — the track where the Indy 500 takes place. A course owned by Willie Nelson and the world’s only NFL-themed golf course are on the itinerary.

Aimed squarely at the ambitious, recreational golfer, Highways to Fairways was created for duffers more in love with adventure than the score at the end of the round. “You’ll get a taste of all the fun you can have playing golf and everything around it,” explains Digital Reno executive producer, James Roy. “The guys focus on the wider world of golf culture by taking in the culture, the food, the nightlife and all recreational activities in the areas surrounding the golf courses.”

At times the hosts go way off the fairway. At different points during the 13-part series, Charlie and his co-host Wayde Greer find themselves driving tanks, firing machine guns and learning to become jockeys.

“That’s the kind of show this is,” says Greer. We’re not your father’s golf show.”

And what’s a golf show without a few cameo appearances? In the last section of each episode Charlie and Wayde are joined for three holes by a “mystery” local legend. Through conversation the duo try to figure out the local legend’s claim to fame.

The show is the culmination of a 2008 dream hatched by the show’s hosts when they were trying to figure out “what to do when they grow up.” Neither had TV or golf experience but weren’t about to let tiny details like that stop them. “You’d be surprised how far you can get on delusion and inspiration,” says Teljeur.

Highways to Fairways debuts March 30th at 9:30 pm ET on TSN 1. Check the TSN listings for showtimes on the other TSN networks.
