Slalom declared Greater Toronto Top Employer for 2020

Slalom, recognized for building on the principles of teamwork, trust, and humility, creates an award-winning atmosphere where employees feel safe, supported, and empowered.

TORONTO, Ontario, Canada – December 2019 – Slalom, a company that continually redefines what’s possible, has been named a Greater Toronto Top Employer for 2020. The competition for this designation is fierce, as the Greater Toronto Area is home to many exceptional employers. “Toronto has seen many booms in its history,” says Anthony Meehan, Publisher at Mediacorp, which manages the competition. “From its early days as a lake port, to furniture and warehousing, then as a financial centre, and now as one of North America’s largest technology hubs, the skyline of this city and the jobs it offers have been shaped by waves of transformation.”

“The Greater Toronto Area continues to be the most competitive employment market in the country,” says Kristina Leung, Senior Editor of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project at Mediacorp. “The rapid growth in technology employers has created opportunities across a wide range of occupations, from healthcare to education and manufacturing. The region’s strong economy draws tens of thousands of new residents each year – local employers are working overtime to attract the best and brightest to their organizations, and you can see their efforts in this year’s list of winners.”

The evaluation process for the award is rigorous, assessing companies using the eight criteria that remain unchanged since the inception of Canada’s Top 100 Employers award 20 years ago.  The evaluation encompasses physical workplace; work atmosphere and social; health, financial, and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement.

The editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers determined that Slalom, when compared to other companies in its field, offers dynamic and forward-thinking employee programs. The company’s values – which include “celebrate authenticity”, “inspire passion and adventure”, and “smile” – have helped grow Slalom’s Toronto offices from three to over 400 employees in just four years. A modern technology and consulting company, Slalom helps solve their clients’ business challenges by bringing the right mix of strategy, technology, and business transformation. The company’s remarkable organic growth in Canada and expanding client base mean employees are continually being given new challenges and advancing their craft.

“We are honoured to receive this recognition,” says Wayne Ingram, General Manager of Slalom Toronto. “It shows us that our drive to create a balanced and inclusive work community for our employees, where they are inspired to be the best version of themselves, is successful. Slalom focuses on people above all else. That means focusing on what’s best for our clients and also investing in what’s best for our team.”

Training and education are critical components of the Slalom employee support system, as well as health and wellness benefits, four weeks starting vacation allowance, and a modern, welcoming workspace. Meaningful project work combined with inclusive social activities driven by the employees, for the employees, help create a sense of family and community. The company encourages, supports, and empowers employees to look for opportunities to drive team and company engagement, from both a Spanish and a French Club to a lunch-time salad club, to community initiatives like raising funds and food for the Daily Bread Food Bank, and participating in the charity’s corporate food sort challenge.

“Our culture is founded on trust and rooted in a certain intimacy and empathy that not only makes it fun for the employees, but creates the kind of environment that allows us to create high-performing teams, which delivers great results for our clients,” says Anthony Gerkis, Managing Director. “As a result, Slalom has created a positive environment for our people because they want to be doing great work to advance their craft and their career, and also make an impact that is meaningful.”

Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Seattle, Slalom has organically grown to over 7,000 employees globally. Slalom was also named one of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2019. To read more about what makes Slalom a unique place to work, check out Greater Toronto’s Top Employers 2020 Magazine’s feature article on Slalom.
