Toronto, ON (July 13, 2021) – When schools were forced to shift to online learning during the pandemic, Kitchener, Ont.-based D2L knew they faced a challenge.
The education pioneer immediately understood a flood of new users with limited experience in online learning was heading its way. Their efforts to meet the challenge and adapt their delivery model to accommodate new demand earned it the national Emerging Tech-Inspired Transformation Award at the 2021 ITWC Digital Transformation Conference held July 13-15.
To help public and private schools quickly shift to online learning, D2L streamlined Brightspace and created a quick start package for new customers.
In the first two months of the pandemic, instructor posts and learner comments in the Activity Feed of D2L Brightspace were on the rise. At the start of this year, D2L Portfolio usage also experienced growth in adoption. D2L was thrilled to see increased customer and learner usage and engagement in D2L Brightspace.
COVID-19 also fueled demand for D2L’s offerings among businesses and organizations seeking virtual training and education options for their employees. To help the people understand the scientific, social, and economic perspectives of the pandemic, it offered a free COVID-19 course for leaders, educators, learners, and the general public.
The award was presented by the Honourable Fedli, Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade.
“This is a sterling example of what organization can do when it places an equal priority on providing top-quality service, end-user experience, and innovation,” said ITWC President Fawn Annan. “D2L’s example raises the bar across an entire industry.”

The Digital Transformation Award program was launched in 2017 to find successful case studies for organizations looking for examples to follow in their own transformation journey. The program receives nominations from companies and public sector organizations coast to coast. An independent panel of industry experts judges the award winners based on a number of key considerations.
