Coming in April: Sixth In-TAC National Virtual Career Expo

According to the ManpowerGroup 2018 Talent Shortage Survey, over 40 per cent of Canadian employers say they’re having difficulty finding and hiring the staff they need. And this dire situation is getting worse, with one in four employers saying it was more difficult to fill certain skilled roles in 2018 than it was in 2017.

By the end of Q4 2017, Canadian job vacancies had reached 399,000 in the private sector alone. According to a report released by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), this was the highest number of unfilled jobs ever recorded in the private sector in Canada. However, the number of private sector openings in Canada would grow in 2018 to roughly 430,000.

CFIB’s VP and chief economist Ted Mallett said Canada’s job vacancy rate now exceeds the level set before the 2008 financial crisis. He said Canadian businesses will respond to these trends by investing more in capital than labour in 2019, and by redistributing wages to key roles.

Two government programs, the Global Talent Stream and Global Skills Strategy, are in place to find and bring in talent from around the world — to help Canadian businesses fill key roles and get back on a growth trajectory. These programs have the full support of Canadian companies, specifically those in the IT/ICT sector. The major challenge, however, remains sourcing desirable overseas talent.

The sixth annual In-TAC National Virtual Career Expo, Canada’s largest online job fair, takes place this coming April 16th and 17th. Last year’s edition attracted more than 7,000 participants from 130 countries. Responding to the call of skilled workers, last year’s private sector participants included IBM, Amazon, Techinsights, Fortinet, Shopify, and Syntronic. The finance sector was represented by TD, CIBC, BMO, Scotiabank and Desjardins. Public sector organizations included Canada Post, CRA and CCC.

The 2019 Expo is expected to be even busier — and more fruitful for individuals seeking dynamic, well-paying jobs as well as organizations seeking top-shelf international talent.
