Dell begins offering Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3030
Dell has announced a new offering for its Dell PowerEdge blade server enclosure — the Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3030. The server runs Cisco Catalyst switches that can be configured and managed to deliver a number of security, resiliency and management features, including end-to-end device, VLAN, traffic and policy management.

The combined Dell and Cisco solution moves external switches into the blade environment and can reduce cabling by up to 90 per cent, according to the company. It can also reduce the data centre real estate requirements by optimizing rack space.

The new Cisco offering is available starting at $5,529.

Fujitsu Launches LifeBook N3530 Notebook with Intel Centrino Duo Mobile
Fujitsu Canada has launched the LifeBook N3530 notebook, featuring the new Intel Centrino Duo processor and Fujitsu’s colour crystal view display.

With a choice of four USB 2.0 ports, a 4-pin IEEE 1394 port, or the dedicated MS/SD/xD card slot, the notebook offers a wide range of file transferring options. The notebook can also be bundled with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and an optional TV tuner and remote control. Other highlights for the product include a 15.4 in. widescreen display and a dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 graphics processor. Also included is a standard 80GB hard drive and 512MB of memory.

The LifeBook N3530 notebook starts at $1,449 for a base configuration and is available through Fujitsu’s Web site, channel partners and select retail outlets. Users can choose from a recommended configuration, or they can customize their system.

Matrox unveils TripleHead to allow users to span up to three 19 in. monitors
Matrox Graphics Inc. has announced the new palm-sized TripleHead2Go, a box which allows users to add three 19 in. monitors with a combined resolution of up to 3840×1024 and 45 in. of total diagonal to many workstations, gaming systems and laptops, even if those systems only support a single display output.

The product allows for spanning across multiple monitors using a computer’s existing analogue VGA monitor cable. The system is compatible with certain NVIDIA and ATI graphics cards, with maximum resolution varying depending on the existing hardware. Compatibility information is available from the Matrox website.

The new product will be available in April 2006 and the MSRP is US $299 through Matrox’s Web site and authorized resellers.

IBM announces release of Tivoli Express data management system
IBM has introduced Tivoli Express Software, catering to small- and mid-sized companies interested in automating the management of PCs, servers, storage and security technology across their entire infrastructure.

Tivoli’s new Express software includes IBM Tivoli Identity Manager Express, which is designed to thwart insider attacks by removing accounts and privileges when workers leave the company, blocking others from misusing accounts that a company has neglected to cancel. It features IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Express, which provides a backup and recovery solution and IBM Tivoli Provisioning Manager Express, which collects, stores and maintains hardware, software and asset information.

Opalis launches new integration pack for IBM Tivoli Enterprise console
Software firm Opalis has announced the roll-out of the Opalis Integration Pack for the IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC). Opalis Integration Server automates enterprise IT operations and integrates the management tools and infrastructure components. The new Integration Pack for IBM TEC increases productivity across the IT department by enabling IT organizations to automate data feeds to other help desks or system monitors, or automate problem management routines and maintenance procedures.

In addition to the new IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console pack, Opalis also offers system monitoring integration packs for Microsoft Operations Manager, NetIQ AppManager, HP OpenView Operations, BMC PATROL and EMC Smarts InCharge.

Pricing for the new IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console pack starts at $25,000.

Networking

BTI Photonic Systems extends Metro Edge with environmentally hardened optical networking platform
Telecommunications provider BTI Photonic Systems is offering extended operating temperature on its Netstender 1020 platform.

The Netstender platform provides thin-route WDM in both regional and Metro Edge applications. Netstender 1020 is certified for the extremes of temperature and humidity in outside plant enclosures with a temperature range of -40 C to +65 C.

Netsender 1020 is designed for optical backhaul of large bandwidth capacity applications including IPTV, 3G wireless data, WiMax and FTTx.

Mitel announces general availability of Live Business Gateway for Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005
Mitel today announced the general availability of the Mitel 3300 Live Business Gateway allowing for integration between the Mitel 3300 IP Communications Platform (ICP), legacy communications solutions, Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 and the Microsoft Office Communicator 2005 integrated communications client.

The Live Business Gateway provides access to presence and collaboration applications throughout their business.

Based on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Extensible Markup Language (XML) and ISO Computer Supported Telecommunications Applications (CSTA) standards, the Live Business Gateway enables all 3300 ICP controllers to inter-operate with Microsoft Office Live Communications Server and the Microsoft Office Communicator client using the CSTA and SIP standards encoded in XML.

Psion Teklogix launches Multi-Modal Communication Software Platform
Mobile computing provider Psion Teklogix has announced the launch of PTX Connect, an enterprise communication software platform enabling mobile workers to communicate in real time.

With PTX Connect, mobile workers can communicate with co-workers in virtually any environment, using a variety of options such as walkie-talkie style Push To Talk, VoIP and a combination of server-based voice, text and scribble messaging. PTX Connect coupled with a 2-D imager in a mobile device allows workers to take pictures, add comments to them on screen and transmit the final images including notations over a wireless network.

PTX Connect will be available on the WORKABOUT PRO product family in March 2006 and on a broader range of Psion Teklogix products later this year.

Security

Dekart introduces new version of Private Disk data encryption software
Dekart has released version 2.07 of Dekart Private Disk, a data protection program that includes Dekart’s Disk Firewall mechanism.

Disk Firewall shields files from viruses and other malware even if the anti-virus or anti-spyware program fails to protect the system. The program allows for the creation of a white list of applications allowing only these programs to access the contents of the encrypted drive. There is also a built-in backup option, which allows you to create compressed backups of the contents of the disk and of the encryption key. Private Disk is transparently encrypted with the NIST-certified implementation of AES 256-bit encryption algorithm.

Private Disk also includes a password quality meter to help ensure that files are safe against attacks. Private Disk encrypts data on flash drives, flash memory cards, handhelds and digital cameras.

A trial version is available for download from the Dekart site. The product is available in English, French and many other languages. A personal or business license costs US $45 and a student licence retails for US $24.95.

Symantec introduces new line of integrated security appliances
Symantec Corp. has rolled out the Symantec Gateway Security 1600 Series, featuring multi-function integrated security appliances designed to provide customers with comprehensive threat protection against emerging threats. The Gateway Security 1600 Series appliances incorporate Symantec Gateway Security v3.0 software to provide eight security functions for maximum effectiveness, while reducing the complexity of security management. The product integrates anti-spam, antivirus, anti-spyware, clientless SSL and IPSec VPN, full-inspection firewall, intrusion prevention, intrusion detection and both dynamic document review and URL list-based content filtering technologies to protect against internet threats.

The product also allows for centralized management and reporting capabilities through the Symantec Gateway Security Advanced Manager 3.0 appliance. Symantec Gateway Security Advanced Manager 3.0 provides secure, centralized, Web-based management of Symantec Gateway Security appliances. Customers also have access to Symantec Security Response, providing the latest security updates and information available.

Symantec Gateway Security 1600 Series appliances will be offered in two different models, 1620 and 1660. The base product licence includes all security functions for unlimited users. The applicance is available from resellers, distributors and systems integrators.
