Xerox Canada is offering an affordable multifunction system and a low-cost colour laser printer to serve the needs of growing SMBs. The Xerox WorkCentre PE220 black-and-white multifunction system, priced at $499, offers printing, copying, faxing and colour scanning in one compact device. It prints and copies at up to 20 pages per minute. The Xerox Phaser 6120 colour laser printer starts at $639 and prints up to five pages per minute in colour and 20 ppm in black-and-white.

FrameMaker 7.2, the latest version of Adobeís enterprise-class authoring and publishing software is meant to bridge the gap between simple word processing and XML authoring and publishing. The software allows users to output directly to multiple channels, including print, PDF, HTML and XML. Users can migrate from unstructured to structured documents, and new structured templates give authors an instant starting point for their documents.

ATEN Technology, which specializes in KVM (keyboard/video/mouse) and remote connectivity solutions to manage servers and other network devices, introduces two DVI (digital video interface)-compliant video switches designed specifically for SOHO and SMB environments. The VS-261/461 DVI Video Switch solutions, available in two- and four-port devices, allow users to switch among two and four DVI or analog media sources (PCs, Macs, DVD players and others), respectively, for output on a single display (LCD monitor, plasma or projector) and a set of speakers.
Linux, or Linux on the side
The latest release of SUSE Linux 10.0 from Novell includes more than 1,500 open source Linux applications and packages that can be optionally installed for Web hosting, application development and home networking. The retail version comes with installation support and comprehensive manuals. The full featured desktop includes the newest versions of the FireFox Web browser and the Windows-compatible OpenOffice.org 2.0 office suite; email and instant messaging clients; graphics creation, editing, and management applications; plus important security tools like spam blockers, anti-virus software and an integrated firewall. Users have the option of replacing their existing operating system with Linux or installing it alongside so that they can experience Linux in a “trial” setting.
