SAP is segmenting its emerging cloud-computing strategy across multiple development platforms, including one code-named “River,” which will support lightweight extensions to its on-premises ERP software. The first River-based application, Carbon Impact 5.0, is set to be unveiled next month and will be running on Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud. SAP has been working on River for about 18 months, said CTO Vishal Sikka in a recent interview.
Apple today announced that it and its carrier partners had sold 1.7 million iPhone 4sin the first three days of the new smartphone’s availability. The company could have sold considerably more if it had had more on hand. Last year, Apple sold approximately 1 million iPhone 3GS phones in that model’s first three days, matching the same number of iPhone 3G units sold in the first three days of the 2008 smartphone’s availability. The 1.7 million iPhone 4s that were sold included the 600,000 pre-orders the company and its partners took before the new model’s June 24 retail launch.
The U.S. government will work to free up 500MHz of wireless spectrum for commercial and unlicensed uses over the next decade, an adviser to President Barack Obama said Monday. Obama’s spectrum plan, which would nearly double the amount of spectrum available for mobile telephone and broadband service, largely mirrors a proposal set out in the U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s national broadband plan, released in March.
Pakistan, which recently stepped up monitoring and blocking of online content that is considered offensive to Islam, has blocked 17 Web sites and is closely monitoring seven other sites and search engines for content considered offensive and blasphemous, according to a spokesman of the country’s telecommunications regulator, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority. Among the seven sites being monitored are Yahoo, Google, YouTube, Amazon, MSN, Hotmail and Bing.
