RIM launches BlackBerry tools for SMB

Research in Motion has released a BlackBerry software package designed for businesses with up to 30 wireless users, the company said Monday.

The package, called BlackBerry Professional Software, can scan a server before installation and suggest a configuration. RIM focused on streamlining installation and administration with the software, the company said.

On the administration side, the software has a manager interface that can be used to add or delete users and define user policies.

The Professional Software shares some of the same capabilities as the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, such as encryption and the ability to use third-party applications developed for the platform.

The BlackBerry Professional Software can be installed on the same server as a company’s e-mail application, such as Microsoft’s Exchange or IBM’s Lotus Domino server. The Professional Software, available worldwide, costs US$499 for five users or $849 for 10.

RIM is also running a promotion through the end of this month that will give businesses five Professional Software licences if they have bought five new BlackBerry devices.
