Smarts Application Discovery Manager finds 500 applications, detects info using SNMP
HOPKINTON, Mass. – EMC Corp. is shipping its Smarts Application Discovery Manager software, designed to give users information on how applications behave and interact with the IT infrastructure.

It can detect more than 500 off-the-shelf applications and create port- and service-based applications. The software includes user-controlled configuration discovery using Simple Network Management Protocol, SSH, WMI, Telnet and IP scanning. It gives information on server configuration, including BIOS, CPUs, domain naming system information, file systems, IP addresses, memory, network devices and operating systems.

Application Discovery Manager also includes change-tracking capabilities. For example, it can create and maintain a log of changes to hardware and software configurations, including application components, configuration files, deployed applications, file systems, installed applications, IP addresses, memory and patches.

EMC claims the software can also identify servers and applications which are “vital to business operations,” such as application or database servers supporting critical business processes.

Its alert capabilities deliver notifications when configurations change.

Application Discovery Manager is touted as a product that “eases the deployment” of information lifecycle management strategies.

Alcatel OmniSwitch 6850 series includes power over Ethernet, GigE to the desktop

PARIS — Alcatel SA has announced a family of Gigabit Ethernet switches with power over Ethernet (PoE) capability.

The OmniSwitch 6850s include the Alcatel Operating System (AOS), Gigabit Ethernet to the desktop and 10 Gigabit uplinks. The OmniSwitch 6850L provides Fast Ethernet to the desktop, and can be upgraded to Gigabit using software.

They are available in both 24-port and 48-port configurations with either DC or AC power, with or without 10-Gigabit uplinks. Eight can be stacked together for a total capacity of 384 Gigabit ports and 16 10-Gigabit ports.

Both the 6850 and 6850L include Layer 2 switching and Layer 3 routing, plus both Internet Protocol version 4 and Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) capability. Its various power options allow companies to use it either as a workgroup switch or in a wiring closet, Alcatel claims.

Security features include Alcatel Access Guardian — which is designed to authenticate devices on the network using the strongest authentication supported by those devices, such as 802.1X or MAC addresses — and auto-sense authentication.

Prices start at US$3,995 for the 6850-24 model. The 6850 is available now and the 6850L is scheduled to ship this summer.

USRobotics access point detects rogues, creates VLANs
CHICAGO — USRobotics has announced the USR5453 Professional Access Point, an 802.11b/g device designed for use either in a hot spot or in a corporate network.

It can connect to clients and can provide bridging between two local-area networks (LANs).

Security features include multi-SSID and multi-BSSID to segregate employee and guest traffic. It supports virtual LANs, Wi-Fi Protected Access 2, 802.11i and 64/128-bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption. Administrators can disable the SSID broadcast, and the device can detect rogue APs.

It can be managed via a Web interface, Telnet, SSH or through third-party SNMP software. It includes a proprietary discovery protocol, which detects other USR5453s on the network, and load balancing across multiple access points. The dynamic channel planning and auto channel selection is designed to assign initial channels and ensure the access points maintain “optimal channel configuration.”

The list price is US$179.99
