Pre-packaged IP telephony

Nortel is introducing standard voice and data packages based on its Business Communication Manager (BCM50). These include two IPT packaged solutions, with everything a small office requires to implement an IP telephony solution for eight or 16 users. The packages, which include products from Nortel’s SMB data portfolio, IP trunks, stations, voice mail, unified messaging and IP telephones, are meant for new installations or for upgrading existing sites. Nortel is also offering three voice-centric packaged solutions in configurations for four, eight and 16 users, and including digital trunks, stations, digital phones and voice mail, plus unified messaging. Finally, Nortel offers one data-only solution, which includes: Nortel’s Business Ethernet Switch 100, Business Access Point 120 and Business Secure Router 222, each designed specifically for the SMB. This package can be added to one of the three voice-centric packages or sold alone.

SMB, meet KVM
ATEN Technology Inc., a vendor of keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) and remote connectivity solutions for managing servers and other network devices, has addressed the issue of remote management for SMBs requiring enterprise-level remote KVM access. ATEN is offering an array of 4-, 8- and 16-port KVM switches that can control multiple computers and servers from a single console. To complement its KVM products, the CN5000 is an IP-based KVM control unit that allows IT administrators to access and manage computers, servers, and other network resources connected across a LAN, WAN, or the Internet. The unit can support up to 64 users and delivers concurrent server access to up to 16 users.

Talks to branches
Avaya Inc. has made enhancements to its one-X Quick Edition, allowing more branches and small office locations to connect to and benefit from intelligent IP communication solutions. Avaya one-X Quick Edition eliminates the need for a central server and embeds the functionality of an IP-PBX into the phones themselves, using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-based peer to peer (P2P) technology. The enhancements include SIP trunking capabilities, which allow small office locations to reduce costs by routing voice traffic securely over an Internet connection. Companies that need to quickly set up offices to assure business continuity — whether setting up temporary offices for events or following a natural disaster — can also benefit from the product.

Cut cheques — and their costs
Checksoft Premier is an upgrade to Avanquest Software‘s Checksoft financial management solution, and is designed to help small businesses to achieve improved cash flow, experience significant cost savings and maintain accurate bookkeeping through automation of daily accounting tasks, design and print capabilities and integration with QuickBooks accounting software. The Check Design Wizard lets small business users print their own checks for savings of up to 80 per cent over the cost of pre-printed checks ordered from their bank, says Avanquest. Checksoft Premier also generates professional invoices and estimates, and eliminates the hassles of day-to-day accounting tasks. Using the Bill Scheduler Wizard, users can also stay on top of payroll and operational expenses and avoid late fees through automated check-generation and update of account registers.
