Nokia showcases converged wireless experiences

Nokia frees the Internet with innovative devices and applications
EarthLink, a provider of municipal Wi-Fi solutions, in collaboration with Nokia, is demonstrating how to use the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet will create mobility options for consumers in EarthLink ‘Wi-Fied’ cities.

Nokia will be showcasing the Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite 8.0. Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite 8.0 combines a comprehensive platform of wireless e-mail, file synchronization and application synchronization, with the robust security, asset collection and reporting of fully integrated device management. Nokia will also be showing its business optimized devices, software and enhancements at the show. Highlights include Nokia E62 and the second wave of Nokia E-series business devices. In addition, featured offerings include other mobile application solutions such as business voice and VoIP over WLAN.

Nokia will be showcasing the multimedia experiences in music, photography, video, blogging as well as GPS navigation and location based services (LBS) on its Nokia Nseries devices; including the Nokia N95 which will arrive in the US during second quarter 2007 and the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet.

A-PDF splits PDFs into smaller-sized files

A-PDF Solution announces the immediate availability of A-PDF Size Splitter 1.2, a tool for splitting any Acrobat PDF file or group of files into smaller-sized PDF files. This version is compatible with Windows Vista. A-PDF Size Splitter 1.2 doesn’t require Adobe Acrobat and works independently, producing PDF documents compatible with Adobe Acrobat Reader 5 and above.

A-PDF Size Splitter 1.2 lets the user set any size of split files. The utility also supports batch operations. A-PDF Size Splitter 1.2 allows choosing how the output files will be named. It is possible to enter own macro selection to give split files any rational name and sequence the user wants. It’s also possible to choose the folder for saving output PDF files.

A-PDF Size Splitter 1.2 works even with password protected PDF files. It keeps the original PDF file encryption. Additionally, the generated split PDF files can be recombined with other PDF files, using A-PDF Merger – another utility, developed for forming new composite PDF files.

A-PDF Size Splitter 1.2 runs under Microsoft Windows 98/NT4/Me/2000/XP/Vista and costs US$49. A-PDF Size Splitter 1.2 is a try-before-you-buy program. A 15-day evaluation version is available as a free download at http://www.a-pdf.com/size_splitter/a-pdf-ss.exe.

Motion Computing announces tablet PC LE1700
Motion Computing unveiled the LE1700, the company’s flagship slate tablet PC. The technologies available on the LE1700 include Motion’s exclusive WriteTouch display option for dual-mode writing and touch-screen input, Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) integration, Microsoft Windows Vista operating system and Intel Core 2 Duo mobile technology.

Optimized by the tablet PC enhancements included in the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system, the LE1700 will allow IT departments to use one operating system across all enterprise hardware. Vista includes additional layers of .NET integration to facilitate the development of digital ink applications. Finally, with Vista, the handwriting experience is improved for the user with a trainable Tablet Input Panel (TIP) that personalizes handwriting recognition.  

With the LE1700, Motion incorporates complete wireless connectivity, including CDMA/EV-DO mobile broadband technology capabilities, WiFi and Bluetooth.  Motion’s embedded wireless broadband technology is a built-in CDMA2000 1xEV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) Revision A mini card. 

Security features include an embedded Trusted Platform Module (TPM) to enable hardware-based encryption and authentication. A built-in fingerprint reader uses biometric data to prevent unauthorized access to system resources and encrypted data. Finally, the Motion Security Center allows for access to the tablet PC’s authentication, password and encryption applications.

The Motion LE1700 Core 2 Duo offering is available from Motion’s worldwide network or at www.motioncomputing.com starting at US$2,199. Motion also is selling a LE1700 base Core Solo offering starting at US$1,999.  The LE1700 comes with a standard one-year limited warranty, extendable to two or three years. In addition, a wide range of complementary peripherals are available, including the Extended Battery, Convertible Keyboard, USB Mobile Keyboard, FlexDock docking station, CD/DVD drive, ergonomic digitizer pens and cases.

Cisco unveils service contract management solution
Cisco introduced two global offerings to help channel partners simplify the process of selling and delivering services. Cisco Service Contract Center is a Web-based solution intended to simplify the way a channel partner manages and sells services, while Cisco E-Consulting for Partners is an analytical, automated system that provides customized recommendations and activities to address gaps in a channel partner’s services practice.

Cisco Service Contract Center is a solution for channel partners who want to identify and track renewal opportunities, quote and order service offerings, and manage service contracts on an ongoing basis. For more details, please visit: www.cisco.com/go/cscc.

Cisco E-Consulting for Partners is an automated process that measures and assesses a channel partner’s sales and delivery capabilities against its industry peers and leading practices and then provides customized recommendations and suggested activities to address any gaps. Features include the “Partner Dashboard,” which provides a quick summary of a partner’s profile and key performance metrics. “Findings and Recommendations” prioritize key findings based on a partner’s assessment and provides customized recommendations for each of the identified areas of opportunity. The “Improvement Tracking” section provides a summary of a partner’s key improvement areas so that it can track its progress over time.

Fluke launches LinkRunner Pro Network Multimeter

Fluke Networks Canada announced the LinkRunner Pro Network Multimeter, a tool to provide front-line technicians the power to troubleshoot Gigabit Ethernet links, resolve 802.1X security conflicts, and provide comprehensive link status test reports. The LinkRunner Pro also performs Power over Ethernet (PoE) verification to the IEEE 802.3af standard and identifies the nearest switch with Cisco, Extreme and Link Layer Discovery Protocols (CDP/EDP/LLDP).

With LinkRunner Pro a technician can negotiate a link with the network up to 1000 Mbps, and ping up to 10 key devices or URLs. LinkRunner Pro can help technicians resolve 802.1X conflicts. The test tool comes with LinkRunner Connect software, which allows technicians to record the test results and upload to a PC for routing with trouble tickets.

LinkRunner Pro also serves as a digital toning device, with signals detected by Fluke Networks’ IntelliTone probe. Digital toning is immune to electrical interference and safe on active networks.
