“”GIVE PEACE A CHANCE””

RARE PHOTOS OF JOHN LENNON AND YOKO ONO BED-IN

EXHIBITED AT VANCOUVER’S ELLIOTTLOUISGALLERY

MAY 26 TO JUNE 2, 2004

Vancouver, B.C., May 4, 2004 — There had never been anything like it before: part political protest, part performance art, part media event and part honeymoon. Thirty-five years ago, on May 26, 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono went to bed in a suite in Montreal’s Queen Elizabeth Hotel, and invited the entire world to join them in seeking an alternative to violence and war in solving global political and social problems.

One photographer, Gerry Deiter, was there for the entire eight days.

Now, to honour the anniversary, an astonishing collection and sale of photographs of those historic moments opens on May 26, 2004 at the ElliottLouisGallery, 1540 West 2nd Avenue. Deiter, in conjunction with the gallery, has mounted an evocative exhibition that captures the magic and spirit of the time. Until June 2, for the first time Vancouverites can see 25 images in colour and black and white that celebrate John and Yoko’s example of peace and love. The Bed-In culminated in the recording on June 1st of what has become the world’s first truly global anti-war anthem, “”Give Peace a Chance.””

At the same time, a selection of photos from the collection will also open in Montreal at the Fairmont QueenElizabethHotel as part of Amnesty International’s 2004 Give Peace A Chance celebration. Justin Trudeau is on the organizing committee of several events including a huge sing-in of the famous Lennon song and will be attending the opening, along with the mayor of Montreal and Amnesty officials. “”I don’t know how many other artists have had a show open simultaneously in two different parts of Canada. I feel very honoured”” said Deiter.

Deiter shot hundreds of images of the event and the personalities involved, and photographed the taping of “”Give Peace a Chance.”” Accompanying John and Yoko on the recording were musician/comedian Tom Smothers, social activist Dr. Timothy Leary, religious leaders, peace activists and many supporters.

The images to be displayed and sold at theElliottLouisGallery were printed by the respected Vancouver photography laboratory, ABC Photocolour – Fine Arts Division, and represent the highest achievement of the print-maker’s art. A collector’s post card has also been printed by Allegra Printing, 211 West 2nd Avenue. Other support has come from Second City Signs and the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

“”I am both excited and grateful to have this collection in my gallery”” says gallery owner Ted Lederer. “”The images are even more powerful today when you see the risks John and Yoko took to encourage others to seek peaceful solutions to war.””
