Storage

Iomega announces high-capacity mobile storage for Windows and Mac OS X
Iomega Corp. announced the availability of two high-capacity portable hard drives that deliver the proven benefits of host-powered operation and Iomega’s Drop Shock technology: the Iomega Portable Hard Drive 120GB USB 2.0/FireWire drive and the Iomega Portable Hard Drive 80GB USB 2.0/FireWire drive.

Both drives feature a metallic industrial design that’s thin at just 0.5-in. (12.7mm) and weighs less than six ounces. Both come with EMC Retrospect Express backup and disaster recovery software. For improved data security, both drives use Iomega’s durable Drop Shock technology to help protect the drive and data from damage due to unexpected shocks. Both drives also feature USB-powered operation, which eliminates the need to carry a separate external power supply.

EMC Retrospect Express software delivers automated and reliable protection for Windows and Mac users. Its design allows users to set up and manage backups on any PC, greatly simplifying disaster recovery. Users can back up open files, verify backup integrity during the backup, have scheduled backups proceed even without logging in and recover individual files or a complete system to any point in time.

The new Iomega dual interface Portable Hard Drive (both capacities) utilizes a 2.5-inch hard drive that delivers 5400 RPM performance. Each drive comes complete with FireWire 400 (1394a) and USB 2.0 cables, a quick start guide and the Iomega Solutions CD.

Iomega’s new drives are compatible with Windows 2000 Professional/XP Home/XP Professional and with Mac OS X 10.1 or higher.

The Iomega Portable Hard Drive 120GB USB 2.0/FireWire is available now for US$219.95 and the Iomega Portable Hard Drive 80GB USB 2.0/FireWire is available now for US$169.95.

ASCOMP Software releases file synchronization solution
ASCOMP Software GmbH has released Synchredible v. 1.6, a Windows backup program that lets users synchronize their desktop and laptop systems. Synchredible works across networks synchronizes all computers’ data files and folders. The program supports simple one-way synchronization, as well as the more complex two-way synchronization, where each computer has files that are newer than those found on the other computer.

Synchredible works with all of the user’s network’s drives, including USB drives and sticks of every variety. The program can use each file’s archive information and ignore files that have not changed since the last backup. Alternatively, the program can synchronize all files and folders across all subdirectories. Synchredible lets you delete files and folders that have been deleted from the source disk. You can even use Synchredible as a simple off-site backup program, and ensure that your critical files and folders are stored safely in another location.

The program gives users control over the timing of their file synchronizations. Synchredible supports synchronization at a fixed time each day, synchronization after a fixed interval of time has passed, or synchronization when Windows starts or finishes.

Synchredible v. 1.6 runs under Windows 95/98/Me/NT4/2000/XP/2003 and costs US$50.86 for a commercial license. A private, non-commercial license is available for US$25.43
