Indian startup incubated at Toronto’s DMZ wins Samsung award

An Indian startup incubated at Toronto’s Digital Media Zone has won a Samsung Innovation Award.

Zumbl, a nine-month-old firm basedin Delhi, India took home the awardthat included a $3,000 prize and a Samsung tablet on Aug. 9. TheSamsung Innovation Awards were launched by Samsung India ElectronicsLtd. and the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT)and were open to IT students in the Indian cities of Delhi, Mumbai,Roorkee andKanpur.

Zumbl took top honours in the Web technology category for Zumble.com,an online portal that uses sentiment mining tools to capture the intentand emotion behind users’ messages.

“Zumbl associates tags, badges, and animated avatars to its users toavoid profanity and pretentious behavior in a way that no chat room hasdone before, creating a safe user community that is based onimpressions from user to user,” co-founder Abhishek Gupta said in anemailed response to questions from ITBusiness.ca.

Zumbl is part of a program that has brought nine entrepreneurs fromseven Indian startups to Ryerson University’s DMZ forfour-month termsthat started on Aug. 4. The startups all hail from either the IndianInstitute of Technology Madras, the Indian Institute of TechnologyDelhi or the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad.

It’s the first international fellowship program of this kind at theDMZ, but DMZ officials said entrepreneurs from China and Israel willalso join the incubator under the same initiative in coming months.
