FreshBooks wins iPhone award, hires VC investor

Toronto-based Web accounting software firm FreshBooks nabbed an award for its iPhone app this week.

The Interaction Design Association (IXDA) award was pinned to the app released in August 2012. The app was designed based on customer consultation involving in-person usability testing of the app, according to the FreshBooks blog. A couple of the developers of the app also detailed the process of conducting user feedback sessions to hone the app’s design on this Six Revisions blog post.

The app has become a favourite of small business accountants because of its many handy features to zero in on business expenses. It allows users to photograph receipts to keep for expense records, track time spent on projects, and create and send invoices and estimates.

FreshBooks also made a notable hire this week, bringing on board Mark MacLeod, who is leaving his position as general partner at Real Ventures. MacLeod is joining the FreshBooks team to lead the business and corporate development. He’ll continue at Real Ventures as a venture partner, he writes in a blog post.
