Symantec enables service-level management and compliance

Symantec Corp. unveiled Veritas Backup Reporter 6.0, an enterprise backup reporting tool that provides IT administrators with visibility into backup and recovery operations.

Backup Reporter enables IT administrators to enhance backup and recovery operations, verify backup service level compliance and run backup as a shared IT service. Backup Reporter enables comprehensive data management, backup consolidation and reporting of heterogeneous environments which support Symantec’s Veritas NetBackup and Backup Exec products, in addition to third-party backup solutions.

Backup Reporter also eliminates the time consuming manual process of creating ad-hoc reporting spreadsheets. Reports can be scheduled and distributed via e-mail, thereby automating a process that can otherwise be prone to error.

Backup Reporter and NetBackup provide real-time operational management with core NetBackup (via NetBackup Operations Manager) for day-to-day IT tasks and advanced backup reporting with Backup Reporter for managing backup service levels and compliance. For customers with multiple NetBackup environments, Backup Reporter can aggregate reporting into one centralized view using common NetBackup icons.

Pricing and Availability
Backup Reporter is available now directly through Symantec or via Symantec’s worldwide network of value-added resellers, distributors and systems integrators. Pricing is based on the number of backup devices (servers and clients) the customer needs to report on. Pricing ranges between US$135-US$600 per backup device.

ALM Works releases JIRA Client 1.0
ALM Works announces the release of JIRA Client 1.0, a handy desktop client for Atlassian JIRA issue tracking and project management system. This client offers interactive user interface, search engine, offline mode and other capabilities that expand JIRA functionality.

JIRA Client downloads issues from JIRA and stores them in a local cache, allowing users to view and edit issues regardless of server’s availability. Any changes that are not marked “draft” are uploaded to JIRA whenever the server is reachable. JIRA Client also periodically polls server for changes and download new or modified issues. These changes are automatically reflected on the JIRA Client’s interface – in issue counters and issue tables.

JIRA Client has search engine complete with Boolean logic processor, which allows users to build any combination of filters, grouped by AND, OR and NOT operations. JIRA Client also lets each user organize search queries into hierarchy: when a “child” query is run, the results of its “parent” are taken and the query’s filter is applied to them. Each downloaded query is displayed along with an issue counter, which shows the number of issues that pass the query’s filter.

JIRA Client may be used to update issues and to submit new issues. Links between issues may be created by dragging “source” issues and dropping them over “target” issues or by using copy-and-paste operation.

Pricing and Availability
JIRA Client corporate licence price is US$169 per user. ALM Works also offers floating, academic and personal licences. JIRA Client is free for use in open-source projects. All customers are entitled to free lifetime patches and minor updates, and to limited-time technical support and major upgrades.

JIRA Client 1.0 runs under Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista, Linux and Apple Mac OS X 10.4. The client is compatible with Atlassian JIRA version 3.3 or later, any edition.

JIRA Client downloads and free time-limited evaluation is available from the product Web site: http://almworks.com/jiraclient
