AMD introduces energy-efficient desktop processors

Infrastructure
AMD releases high performance desktop processors
AMD introduced desktop processors designed for users seeking the energy-conscious or high-performance computing. The 45-watt AMD Athlon(tm) 64 single-core processors 3500+ and 3800+ can help consumers and businesses save energy. AMD has also introduced the AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor 6000+. These processors are expected to be immediately available in the channel and from OEMs including Alienware, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Systemax and Voodoo.

The energy-efficient AMD Athlon 64 processors 3500+ and 3800+ are based on 65nm technology. Using the reduced line widths enabled by 65nm technology, AMD can produce more processors on a 300mm wafer while manufacturing processors designed for low-power consumption.

Desktop systems based on AMD64 dual-core technology, including the AMD Athlon 64 X2 processor 6000+, benefit from AMD’s open platform approach that enables technologies designed for mainstream PC experiences with graphics performance, high quality video, and minimal idle power draw. These systems can also power Microsoft Windows Vista and run the visual, networking and security enhancements now available in the Vista operating system.

Pricing for the 65nm energy-efficient AMD Athlon 64 processors 3500+ and 3800+ are US$88 and US$93, respectively in one KU. Pricing for the AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor 6000+ is US$464 in one KU. For pricing details, please visit www.amd.com/pricing.

Data Management

DataMirror offers data integration solution

DataMirror unveiled DataMirror Transformation Server 6.0, delivering usability and support enhancements to help organizations make business decisions and maximize their business intelligence return on investment (ROI).

DataMirror Transformation Server is a real-time and bi-directional data integration solution that uses log-based Change Data Capture (CDC) technology to capture changed data from existing database recovery logs, avoiding the overheads and risks associated with trigger-based and table-scan based solutions. Data changes are captured in the source system as they happen and flow immediately to the target database systems or middleware message queues, keeping distributed information up-to-date and in sync.

Transformation Server 6.0 is packed with a number of features including:

Storage
EMC consolidates, manages and protects information
EMC Corp., announced several solutions to help its customers consolidate, back up, archive and protect their information.

EMC introduced the EMC CLARiiON CX3-10 UltraScale networked storage system, an entry point into its series of full four Gb/s storage arrays; EMC RecoverPoint/SE software, an entry point for network-based asynchronous replication in mid-tier storage environments; and three solutions to help midsize businesses consolidate, back up, archive and protect their Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Microsoft Exchange 2003 and Oracle RAC 10g environments.

An entry point into the EMC CX3 UltraScale series of full four Gb/s networked storage systems, the CX3-10 system can scale to 30TB of capacity. It features combined Fibre Channel and iSCSI connectivity within the same array. Customers deploying networked storage for the first time can use iSCSI for applications such as Microsoft Exchange and can use Fibre Channel for more bandwidth-intensive applications such as data warehouses built on Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server.

The CX3-10 FC/iSCSI system joins the CX3-20, CX3-40 and CX3-80 models in supporting all CLARiiON array-based software functionality, including data management, replication and mobility. The CX3-10 system also inherits all of the ease-of-use capabilities of the EMC Navisphere management software including Navisphere Task Bar, Navisphere Quality of Service Manager and Virtual LUN technology. With the CLARiiON CX3-10 system, customers are able to mix Fibre Channel and SATA disk drives in the same array to meet tiered storage requirements or deploy an all-SATA configuration.

The EMC RecoverPoint/SE software is part of the RecoverPoint family and specifically designed for network-based replication between any two CX and/or CX3 UltraScale systems. This data protection solution provides customers with any point-in-time recovery of their data from events including database corruption, server failures, software errors, viruses, end-user errors and other events that can take down the operations of an entire data centre or IT facility.

With RecoverPoint/SE, CLARiiON customers can define policies to manage their recovery time objectives across a wide range of business applications, all from a single interface. In addition, RecoverPoint/SE offers coordinated and consistent recovery of related Windows applications such as Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server, enabling organizations to restart applications from the same point in time.

The EMC Reference Architectures and Assessment Services for Microsoft Exchange 2003 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 provide EMC partners with documented blueprints and practices for implementing consolidation, backup and disaster recovery solutions for midsize customers. The EMC solution for Exchange 2003 also helps EMC partners deliver proven archiving solutions to help midsize customers manage information growth.

The EMC Assessment for Oracle RAC10g helps EMC partners customize and optimize each solution for different application and database workloads and enhance ease of deployment by leveraging documented EMC best practices and methodologies.

The EMC CX3-10 system, EMC RecoverPoint/SE software and the EMC Reference Architectures and Assessment Services for Microsoft Exchange 2003, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and Oracle RAC 10g are available immediately from EMC and its authorized resellers.
