Shopify deal reaches 27 million new potential customers

A build-your-own Web site tool and a create-your-own online store service are combining forces to offer a complete self-service package to small businesses.

A deal announced today will see Ottawa-based Shopify’s e-commerce service being offered to the international user base of Wix. The San Francisco-based firm is an HTML5 Web publishing platform that allows the setup of Web sites using templates for its 27 million users worldwide. Now those customers will be able to add Shopify to their online presence via an app available on Wix App Market.

Currently host to 35,000 plus online retailers, Shopify now has an opportunity to even further expand its user base. The fast-growing pace of Shopify has won it some attention already, including an Ernst & Young finalist for Entrepreneur of the Year in 2011.

Shopify has also recently announced Catalog, an iPad-based shopping app. Quite the catalogue it is, showcasing 5 million products from Shopify stores.
