Intuit Canada launches QuickBooks Online

Businesses scrambling to get their books in order ahead of the end-of-the month deadline for filing taxes now have one more option for help with the launch of QuickBooks Online.

Intuit Canada has launched a cloud-based version of the popular desktop software used by many small businesses to maintain the general ledger. The new QuickBooks Online offering is being promoted with a free 30 days of service and three levels of monthly payment options. It’s being advertised as ideal for small businesses that need access for five employees (plus an accountant) or less.

QuickBooks Online has been available in other countries since 2010, but is now offering a Canada-specific version with appropriate tax code information. Globally, there are 300,000 users of the Web-based software.

Users will be able to update their books from Windows and Mac-based PCs, as well as use mobile devices running iOS and Android.  The software is automatically updated, so users don’t have to buy new software versions from year to year.

Intuit’s move to Web-based software may be an attempt to stave off competition for competitors like Wave Accounting. The Toronto-based startup has been receiving attention for its free Web-based software designed for businesses with five employees or less. It won the People’s Choice award at the Canadian Innovation Exchange and a Deloitte Companies-to-Watch award.

Intuit has been working to expand its online software offerings since acquiring Mint.com in September 2009. That Web site is designed to help consumers manage their personal finances using an iPhone app and by linking directly

There are three versions of QuickBooks Online available to small businesses. The features included and costs are detailed by Intuit Canada:

  • QuickBooks Online EasyStart – Design and create professional invoices, keep an eye on cash flow and have one convenient place for your customer data. $9 per month for one user plus accountant access.
  • QuickBooks Online Essentials – Generate sales tax returns with one click; handle multiple currencies, harness powerful reporting tools. $19 per month for three users plus accountant access.
  • QuickBooks Online Plus – Plan ahead with budgeting and customizable reports. $29 per month for five users plus accountant access.

Intuit Canada says unsatisfied customers can claim a full refund within 60 days of signing up for the service.
