Cisco study finds everyone and everything going mobile
Network World
Jim Duffy writes about the mobile data traffic market in the next few years.

“Mobile data traffic will increase 26-fold in the next five years due to a surge in video on mobile Internet devices, according to Cisco’s most recent Visual Networking Index (VNI) study. This is a 92 per cent compound annual growth rate, which will result in mobile video making up 66 per cent of all mobile data traffic by 2015. The Cisco VNI relies upon independent analyst forecasts, mobile data usage studies and Cisco’s own estimates. It found that mobile video will increase 35-fold from 2010 to 2015, and mobile traffic originating from tablet devices is expected to grow 205-fold from 2010 to 2015. This is the highest growth rate of any device category tracked by the Cisco VNI.”

Consumers urged to step up wireless security
The Register
John Leyden outlines why it’s important for consumers to beef up their wireless security practices.

“Consumers are once again being urged to use the latest (WPA2) encryption technology and apply strong passwords to protect home networks from snooping and other attacks. The call comes in a survey by industry trade body the Wi-Fi Alliance, which warned on Wednesday that ‘borrowing’ access to unprotected Wi-Fi access is still commonplace. A poll by the Wi-Fi Alliance, conducted by Wakefield Research, found that one-third (32 per cent) of respondents said they had attempted to get onto Wi-Fi network that wasn’t theirs – well up from the 18 per cent recorded in an equivalent a December 2008 poll.”
