Dell axes hackintosh makers’ favourite netbook

Tony Smith writes that Dell is discontinuing its Inspiron Mini 9 netbook product.

“Dell has knocked the nine-inch machine on the head, preferring instead to point punters at the 10-inch Mini 10 and Mini 10v. The latter offers the same spec as the Mini 9, but with a bigger screen and keyboard, and a 160GB hard drive. What’s not to like? asks Dell.”

“The mini NB205 netbook, a system boasting a full-sized keyboard, large touchpad and nine hours of battery life, according to the company. It marks Toshiba’s first such entry into the growing netbook market. Positioned as a premium netbook, the system features a 10.1-inch diagonal widescreen LED backlit display, a full-size QWERTY raised-tile (‘chiclet’) keyboard and a full-size touchpad. It has Microsoft Windows XP installed.”

Apple’s dominance in the smartphone market, combined with the iPhone’s already innovative feature set, put the company in a strong position to stave off competitors, including the upcoming Palm Pre, said Roger Entner, an analyst at Nielsen Mobile.”
