Apple brings Multi-Touch to MacBook Pro, updates MacBooks

Apple has upgraded its MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops, prices remain in line with those of the previous range.

As Macworld predicted this morning, Apple has souped-up its MacBooks with faster processors, raised pre-installed RAM and increased hard drive capacities.

The new model Macs are equipped with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors, offer larger hard drives and ship with 2GB of memory as standard in most models. All MacBooks and MacBook Pros can now house up to 4GB of memory.

The souped-up MacBook Pro features the latest NVIDIA graphics processors (equipped with 512MB of video memory on the higher-end 15-inch and 17-inch models) and, confirming widespread speculation, the new pro laptops also feature the Multi-Touch trackpad first introduced with the MacBook Air.

These trackpads offer Multi-Touch gesture support for pinch, rotate and swipe, making it intuitive to zoom and rotate photos in iPhoto or Aperture 2 or browse web pages in Safari.

All the new Macs offer iSight cameras, a MagSafe power adaptor and have 802.11n Wi-Fi cards built in. They also offer an illuminated keyboard (MacBook Pro only), 10/100/1000 BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet; Bluetooth; analogue and digital audio inputs and outputs; USB 2.0; FireWire and a built-in SuperDrive. They all ship with iLife ’08 and have OS X Leopard pre-installed.

The new MacBook Pro features the latest Intel Core 2 Duo technology with up to a 2.6 GHz processor with 6MB of shared L2 cache; up to 4GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory and up to a 300GB hard drive, plus Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics with up to 512MB of video memory.

Featuring a 13-inch glossy wide-screen display the new MacBook range consists of three models specified as Macworld UK confirmed this morning: white 2.1GHz and 2.4GHz models with 120GB or 160GB 5,400 rpm hard drives and a black 2.4GHz model with a 250GB 5,400 rpm hard drive.

The 2.4 GHz MacBooks ship with 2GB of memory standard, expandable up to 4GB across the line. The new MacBook and MacBook Pro models are available now.
