Symantec’s Norton 2011 offerings focus on speed, performance

Security vendor Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) promises its Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security 2011 suites, launching in Canada Monday, offer faster performance and lighter system impact than its previous solutions.

Lana Knop, principal product manager for Symantec’s consumer business unit, said the Norton 2011 family features 100 component updates, in addition to an improved behavioural engine.

Norton includes reputation-based security to check when and where programs originate from to help identify and stop malicious activity. It also comes with System Insight 2.0, which helps with proactive performance alerts. System Insight 2.0 will monitor all applications that are running and will alert users if a program is overusing system resources. Since users are now gaining more visibility into their computer system’s performance, Knop said they’ll be able to make the appropriate changes to better improve the performance of their PC.

With Download Insight 2.0, which is also based on a file’s reputation, every file downloaded to the PC is checked before it’s able to run. Other improvements include an installation time of just 41 seconds, Knop said, in addition to 25 per cent less impact on browsing the Web and a reduced impact on copying files by over 60 per cent.

“The Norton 2011 suite of products is focused on improved speed and performance,” Knop said.

Both Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security 2011 products will be available Monday in English and French. The price for a one-user license for Norton AntiVirus is $49.99 and for three users, it’s $69.99. For Norton Internet Security 2011, which is good for up to three users, it’s $79.99.

Also included in the Norton suites and available as a free tool is Norton Power Eraser.

“Norton Power Eraser is a free tool for everyone,” Knop said. “It searches for a specific type of malware and fake antivirus programs, removes it and resolves a user’s issues.”
